Hi everyone!

My great grandfather left for America 1903,
his name was Juho Pekka Alarikinpoika Koutaniemi, born May 19, 1878 in Kuusamo, Finland.

It took me some time to find him in the passengerlists, Ellis Island. (Not easy I tell you), with help from a wonderful person named Tuula C, because his name was misspelt. I found a John Kantnoemi, arriwed May 17, 1903, with the Cedric from Liverpool, Englang. (Juhos wife Anna Maria and daughter Lydia arriwed 1 year later.)

It says that he is 25 yrs. and a farmer and he is going to his cousin Abram Törmänen in Cloquet in Minnesota.

My grandfather Uuno Antero and his brother Juho (Jani) was born over there.
Uuno Antero Koutaniemi : born March 25, 1907 (Duluth Minnesota)
Juho (Jani) Albert Koutaniemi : born March 17, 1905 (Duluth Minnesota)

What I´m told, Anna Maria and the children returned to Finland around 1910,
and that Juho Pekka died in America, Duluth, Minnesota in July 06, 1924.

Do you/anyone recognize these names or persons? Please write to me and tell.

Best regards

Molli :)

Hi Molli,

Here are links to some useful genealogy sites:

HisKi: http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en A searchable database indexed by Parish, for birth, death, marriage and moves into/out of a parish. But you must use Scandinavian characters when entering data. You can type these characters by using the Alt key in conjunction with various numbers on the number keypad (not those above the letters) (see attached)

SSHY: http://www.digiarkisto.org/sshy/index_eng.htm Here you will find the actual Parish records...Rippikirja (Communion Book); Lastenkirja (Children's Book); Syntyneet (Birth); Kuolleet (Death); Vihityt (Marriage); Muuttaneet (Moves in/out). Most records are free to see; but membership affords access to more current information.

Institute of Migration: http://www.migrationinstitute.fi/emreg/index_e.php A searchable database for Finnish Emigrants. A basic search is free, but membership is required to view the records.

Finnish Digital Archives: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/?lang=en_US Sometimes you will find records here which are not available at SSHY.

Finnish Parishes: http://hiski.genealogia.fi/seurakunnat/indexe.html General information on Parishes in Finland.

Finnish/Swedish Translations: http://www.saunalahti.fi/hirvela/indexuk.html Translations for common words and phrases found in the Parish books

About SSHY, I should have added:

Click on Church Records in the left pane and you will see an alphabetized listing of parishes.
Then click on Kuusamo to view available records.

Here are two pages from the members' site at SSHY:

Kuusamo Rippikirja, 1885-1894, Heikkila 28, Koutaniemi. Johan Petter is not shown here because he had not yet been admitted to the church. This usually occurred at the age of 15-16, but not before the person had demonstrated sufficient knowledge of their religion. The names of children were first recorded in Lastenkirja. After they were admitted to the church, their names were entered into Rippikirja. In the 6th column on this page, you can see that Hilda Maria was admitted in 1891; and Kalle Arvid in 1894. The next to last column shows that Hilda Maria went to Amerikka in 1893. What looks like fractions in the year columns, are the dates (day/month) when these people received communion, which was once a year.

Kuusamo Lastenkirja, 1881-1890, Heikkila 28, Koutaniemi. Eight children are shown here, including Kustaa Herman, who died 27.12.1891

Institute of Migration shows that Jenni Katariina Koutaniemi, born 27.5.1888, home parish Kuusamo, received a passport to Amerikka on 4.7.1910

This could be her...Passenger list for SS Empress of Britain, which departed Liverpool, England on 15.7.1910 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on 21.7.1910, shows Jenni Koutala, age 23, domestic, from Kuusamo, father Aldrik Koutala; gong to join b-i-l Herman Kotka in Cloquet, MN (line 24).

The Minnesota Marriage index shows Hilda Maata married Herman Kotka, 1.13.1900, Carlton County, MN. I think this is Hilda Maria, born 2.3.1873, daughter of Sten Alrik Määtä and Anna Maria, who came to America in 1893.

The Death Index shows that Herman Kotka died 29.5.1912, Carlton County, MN

Here are the 1910, 1920 and 1930 US Census...

The 1910 US Census shows Herman Kotka at 34 11th Street, Cloquet, MN. This is the same address listed by Jenni Koutala in 1910, for b-i-l Herman Kotka in Cloquet.

Family Search shows Donald Gene Ojala, born 1932, died 26.8.1932, Carlton County, MN; parents Nick Ojala and Jennie Koutala. I think this is Jennie Katariina, your great grandfather's sister, born 27.5.1888

Nick Ojala, wife Jennie and children, 1920 and 1930 US Census, St. Louis County and Carlton County, MN, respectively.

The 1920 Census also shows Peter Koutala, age 42, brother-in-law to Nick Ojala, and therefore brother to Jennie. I think this is your great grandfather, Juho Pekka.

Minnesota Death Index shows Jennie Katharine Ojala, born 27.5.1888, died 8.5.1958, St. Louis County, MN

You're welcome Molli...

From the members' site at SSHY:

Juho Pekka Koutaniemi and Anna Maria Kivilahti were married 13.3.1899, Kuusamo.

Daughter Lyydi Maria was born 24.6.1901, Kuusamo.

Also...via HisKi and SSHY, the paternal line of Juho Pekka can be traced to Samuel Staffansson Määttä, born 1700; died 11.6.1772, Kuusamo

Happy searching...

The 1910 census shows a Peter Kotela as a roomer in a house in Cloquet, single, year of immigration 1908, estimated birth year 1880.

1920 census shows a Peter Koutala (someone has asked for correction to Peter Rantala) Township 50, St Louis County, Minnesota, age 42, estimated birth year abt 1878, birthplace Finland, relation to head of House - brother-in-law, single, year of immigration 1903 (some has corrected to 1913). He is living in the Ojala house. I don't know if this Peter is the correct one because of the corrections someone has made. I don't know where township 50 is, but it is located in northern Minnesota which is where Cloquet is located. Cloquet is in Carlton County.

There is also a Peter Coutala, residence Carlton County that was naturalized as an American citizen. The ancestry site does not give any other information on that.

I could not find a death record in either Carlton or St Louis County.

This could be the return of Anna Koutala and the 3 children to Finland via Montreal, Canada and Liverpool, England in 1909 (last names on passenger list).

Anna would have been 28, not 35 years old and her daughter was Lyddi, not Lizzi.

But children are normally shown on these passenger lists, from oldest to youngest, regardless of sex. And the 9 for "Lizzi" may have been put in the wrong column, i.e., months rather than years.

Hi Kathy,

Thank you for the info,
My father has called his grandfather Juho Pekka for " Peter " sometimes. He´s been told that Peter was killed in a vehicle-accident on his way to or from work and there was others killed too, 06 July 1924, but I don´t know where this took place, I´ve been told that it was in Duluth, Minnesota.

Township 50 of St. Louis County Minnesota includes Range 13 through 21 West. Range 13 West is Lakeview which is on the shore of Lake Superior (Duluth) and Range 21 West is just west of Prairie Lake. They are just north of the Carlton county line.
