Hi - I'm a "Finn" by marriage. My roots are in the Deep South (S. Ga. and N. FL - if Florida still counts as "South!") I live in North Alabama.

Yes, Kevin, I'm the one searching for Malakias and Margareeta Laukka, my husbands grandparents, who lived in and around Negaunee in Upper Michigan in the early 1900s.

Hi Libby,
Welcome aboard. Two items about the Deep South. Settlers from the New Sweden Colony have been tracked by 1790 to Georgia and by 1825 to Florida and Louisiana. The New Sweden Colonial Society website might have more. I got this from Jordan and Kaup's book AMERICAN BACKWOODS TECHNOLOGY.
And the second: Charles Linn was a Swedish Finn who settled in Montgomery Alabama, and then "retired" to little Mudtown, built a bank, eventually built the tallest building for miles around, and then an iron foundry which became a small part of US Steel. Mudtown? That's what Birmingham was named at first. There should be a lot of descendents of his around somewhere.
