Carl Fredrik Enqvist, b. 31 May 1831, Paavola, Finland, emigrated to America in 1881, d. 26 Jan 1882 in America. He took his daughter Maria Beata, b. 15 May 1858, with him to America. He was married to Johanna Norrgran, b. 22 Jul 1832. She and their 5 other children stayed in Finland and emigrated to America 3 years after Carl died. The wife and children were never heard from again.. no one knows where they went. (Two sons died in Finland) The children who emigrated were:
- Josefina, b. 26 May 1860
- Viktor Carlsson, b. 1 Nov 1870
- Alina Amalia, b. 12 Aug 1875

Is it possible to find anything about this family in the US?

June,
I found Johanna's arrival in 1885 to the port of Philadelphia. With her are a son Robert and daughter Aleena. I also found a 1900 census in Saybrook, Ashtabula, OH that might be them. Robert is listed as Robert W so maybe he was Wiktor Robert. Having trouble with attachments tonight. Is there a new procedure? Never mind, it worked. Notice in both images it says they were born in Sweden.

Karen,

According to church records in Finland, Robert was born 1863 and died 1878. Another son Karl Edvard, b. 1865, d. 1871 - so I don't know who Robert W. b. 1879 could be. Son Viktor was b. 1870. Dates don't seem to agree.. of course, this could be another one of those cases where emigrants don't know their exact date of birth..I've had a few of them lately.

I can't make out the name of the husband in the 1900 census, who was b. 1871, with wife Anna. Looks like he was one of the sons married to an Anna and mother Johanna lived with them. It shows that the daughter Lena was b. 1877 in Ohio.. but the daughter Alina was born 1875 in Finland. I'm confused... don't know what to make of it. Guess I'll send this on to Finland and let them llook it over to see what they think. The dates I sent above are from church records, so they are correct.

Thanks for looking..

June,
In that 1900 census says Robert W or V born Sweden, that daughter Lucy and son Robert are his children born Ohio. I found the births of two of the Enqvist children on Family Search. Josefina Carlsdotter born 26 May 1860 in Kälviä to Carl Fredrik Enqvist and Johanna. Maria Beata Carlsdotter born 15 Jan 1858, not May, Mustasaari to same parents. Havent found the other children. On the 1910 census more children. OH Death Index has, Annie Enquist died 1 Jan 1911 Ashtabula, Lucy A Enquist b 1898 died 26 Feb 1986 in Cleveland, Lewis V born 1904 died 18 Apr 1977 Ashtabula and Robert Enquist died 19 Nov 1919. This is Robert's son.

Karen,

Josefina and Maria Beata definitely are the daughters of Carl Fredrik according to the info. I have.. so it looks like Johanna and her children went to Ohio. I remember reading that a lot of people from Finland settled in Ashtabula. I hope someone in Finland can figure out who Robert is..their records show that of the 3 sons in that family, two died and only Victor came to the US. I wonder if he was Viktor Robert, b. 1870. Their father Carl Fredrik had gone to the US in 1881 to look for work (he was a school teacher) but for some reason, he didn't find work, and he had written his wife that he hoped to get enough money to return to Finland, and then he died 26 Jan 1882 at age 51 before he could get the money. No mention as to where he was, but maybe he was in Ohio and that's why his widow went there.
