Kenneth E. Holmes, 95, one of Wrenshall's pioneers, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at his home.

He was born May 22, 1918 in Wrenshall to Winfield and Elizabeth (Yokum) Holmes.

He graduated from Wrenshall High School in 1936. Ken was united in marriage to Margaret Ziemski in Duluth on June 14, 1947. He worked as a farmer and also as bus foreman for the Wrenshall Public Schools, and was a member of Union Local 545. Ken served on the Wrenshall Community Development Assoc.; the Wrenshall Volunteer Fire Dept. for 16 years; and help with the building of the Brickyard Restaurant; was an active member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club; St. Francis Catholic Church; and had served many years as a Board Member for Pinewood Learning Center. He was born and passed away on the same family property.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; six brothers, Hugh, Lawrence, an infant brother, Lyle, Ross, and Cecil; and one sister, Florence Johnson.

He is survived by three daughters, Claire (Al) Ankrum, Gayle (John) Bockelman and Mary Kay Holmes; two grandchildren, Megan and Kevin Ankrum; two great-grandchildren, Zephie and Lylah; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday Aug. 4, 2013 in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, with a Wake Service and eulogies beginning at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will resume on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton.
