Ruben Winkka, 87, died on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 in Park Rapids, Minn.

He was born on May 4, 1926 in Maple to the late Hemming and Mary (Ammesmaki) Winkka. He was one of 12 children. He married Lucille Johnson in 1945, who died in 1988. In 1989, he married Bonnie Johnson.

He attended school in Maple. As a young man he worked on the family farm and sailed on the ore boats of Lake Superior, worked for the Great Northern Railroad and spent many years working in East Grand Forks, Minn. He was one of the unsung heroes who made things work. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. He loved to dance, sing and play the guitar. He and wife Bonnie spent many winters in Arizona.

In addition to his wife Bonnie, Ruben is survived by sisters Irene Brazill of Superior and Elvie Agacki of Lakeside; his children Sheilla (David) Snell of Americus, Ga., Bonnie (Earle) Turvey of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gary (Bev) Winkka of Bemidji, Minn., Douglas Winkka of Rapid City, S.D., Jay (Jane) Johnson of Grand Forks, N.D., Jayne (Steve) Nelson of East Grand Forks, Minn., Jeff (Kathy) Johnson of Park Rapids, Minn.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Matt, Eino and Oscar Winkka, and sisters, Senja Keller, Mae Schuler, Helen Johnson, Elsie Johnson, Aileen Gadda, and Lillian Frank.

Ruben Winkka was a good man, quick with a joke and always ready with a song. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

Memorial services were held in Park Rapids, Minn. and East Grand Forks, Minn.
