Richard Mikkola, 83, longtime Maple area resident, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Essentia Health, St Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1929 in Cloverland, the son of Edward and Hjala (Ahola) Mikkola.

He served his country in the United States Army enlisting at the age of 17, serving in the Korean War and the European theater.

Richard married Bertha E. Tyykila on Aug. 18, 1952 in Duluth and had recently celebrated 61 years of marriage.

He was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad; was a Dairy Farmer; he worked for the Wisconsin state grain commission and Richard worked for the United States Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier for many years before he retired.

He was a life member of V.F.W. Post No. 15051. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 409; Rural Carriers Association. Richard loved to hunt and made many trips to Wyoming. He loved to fish the Brule River and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada.

Richard was an avid Green bay Packer fan and loved to read.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; three sisters, Julia Anderson, Melrude, Minn., Anna (Jim) Swanson, Brule and Mary Jane Mattson, Superior; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death his parents, Edward and Hjala Mikkola.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and will continue until the 12 Noon funeral service on Thursday, October 10 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Maple with Rev. John Knierim, officiating.

Military honors will be accorded by the Bong - Hofstedt American Legion Post No. 409, Color Guard at the church.

Pallbearers for the service will be Walter Swenson, Dave Paulus, Donald Anderson, Mark Santikko, Gary Tyykila and Archie Lahti.

Burial will be in Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Maple.
