I am trying to find out more of who my family is. I was able to trace back my great grandparents to Ellis Island.

Elias or Elijas Hernesaho - born 7/26/1890 Rurejoki, Naasan, Laani, Finland (Military paperwork) or Ejijarvi (ship manifest), immigrated 1/21/1911 to stay with his sister Sofia Hernesaho - born abt. 1884. Both list parent as Leena or Lena Hernesaho in Evijarvi, Finland.

Elias marrried Aini Maria Ora here in the US. However I have very little information on her.
She was born in aprox. 1893, father: Johan Ora, She immigrated to the US on 9/24/1910. Listed residence as Jaaski, Finland - 18 years old.

If anyone can give me any direction on where to go next, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Gina

Father Elias Aaponpoika (Abrahamsson) Hernesaho, b. 23 Sep 1852 (http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/evijarvi/syntyneet_1837-1868_mko41-49/129.htm) in Evijärvi, d. 5 Jul 1897.
Mother Leena(Helena) Juhontytär (Johansdotter) Korri, b. 7 Jul 1857 (http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/kirjat/Kirkonkirjat/lappajarvi/syntyneet_1847-1866_uk150/159.htm) in Lappajärvi
She remarried in 1898 Matti Matinpoika Timo, b. 24 Nov 1843 in Lappajärvi

Kurejoki is a village in nearby Alajärvi parish. Maybe he lived there before emigration. No online records for that time though.

You can search yourself digitized church records at FFHA (SSHY) (http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm) - freely as to records over 125 years back, and about 100-125 years old ones as a member. Those two links above for newer material are not searched pages, but the images themselves - to get you started
For older times you may find help from HisKi database (http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en).

Happy research among your Finnish ancestors!

Eva Pöhö moved into Jääski 20.1.1877 from St Andreae. On 15.10.1876 married in St Andreae, Jääskis, Kärinniemi, Johan Johansson Ora and Eva Georgsdotter Pöhö, Partala No 1. So her father is found as George, Yrö, Jöran. (same name)
Eva was born 21.5.1858 St Andreae, Partala No1 to Jöran Johansson Pöhö and Lisa Davidsdotter Rahkonen.
From Jääksi, Kärinniemi, 4.5.1855 Johan Andersson Ora and Sofia Alexandersdotter Fosselius, Johannes.

Gina,

I made some quick connections to Elias' parents. He surely is distantly related to both Karen and me in the parishes around Lake Lappajärvi. We both have early ancestors there, but since yours is more recent, common connections are multiple through both of his parents (4th, 5th, 6th cousins etc. themselves).
You need to notice that last names in western Finland follow the farm names, unlike surnames in eastern parts of the country. For instance, Helena's father was not originally Korri, but her mother was first married to Korri and after husband's early death (age 32) her 2nd husband, widower himself, moved from Hanhikangas to Korri.
I encourage you to try to find the details yourself, and ask whenever in trouble. It's more rewarding that way! Unfortunately some scanned material is poor quality :(

You certainly have plenty of distant relatives in this forum.

:) Jaska

Just wanted to update you both! Since my last posting and thanks to your help I have located some family members here in America! I have also found that my great great grandpa Elias Aaponpoika (Abrahamsson) Hernesaho lived in South Carolina as a missionary.
I am still learning how to navigate both of the databases (which can be difficult without knowing the Finnish language).
If my timeline is correct Helena (my great great grandma) remarried in 1898 after Elias passed away in 1897 - he came to America in 1894 without his family and she stayed in Finland.
Hopefully with my new connections I will be able to fill in some holes.
Thanks again!
