A younger cousin visited me and we talked about older times... I asked if she had ever eaten knäckebröd - known as hardtack - and she had no idea what I was talking about. I gave her this website to read and see what it looks like:

My grandmothers used to make it, and we made it sometimes, but were also able to buy the thin, round shapes at a local Scandinavian fish market that carried all sorts of goodies to eat. I like to break off a piece and put pickled herring and onions on it.. yum..

I liked my: ....." Reikäleipä " with ..... BUTTER . lots of it ...! Yes; Herring, was acceptable, but Butter was mandatory on mine...

June: You are making me hungry - just reading this.

best regards

Ed

Ed,

My father also used lots of butter... but we kids used to put just about anything on ours... peanut butter, jelly, baked beans, etc.... :)
