Born 18 Aug 1884 in Himango Finland. Emigrated to US in 1906. Never married. At Cuffy's Cove CA in 1910, outside Cordova Alaska in 1918, in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County WA in 1920, 1930. At Longview, Cowlitz, WA in 1942. Cousin to Ester Sandkulla (born Terjärv, lived in Rochester, Thurston, WA).

Seeking his parents, his relationship to Sandkulla's of Terjärv, and his death information.

I looked at HisKi, but there was no one named Matti William born in Himango in 1884.. there were 4 boys born in 1884, but none in August and none named Matti William.... there was one Anders William Koski, b. 17 Mar 1884.

Also checked Ester Sandkulla. She was born 1895 in Evijärvi, where her parents moved in 1893 from Terjärv.

Here is his Naturalization from Ancestry.com. According to that and his WWII Draft info he was born Himango.

I searched this possibility (moved to Himango): http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en+t1477447

Children's book: http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/sivut/jasenille/paikat.php?bid=14739&pnum=55
Matti Wilhelm Kaalikoski's birth date there is 5 Aug 1883, father Zacris Wilhelm Zacrisson Kaalikoski b. 15 Dec 1856 in Himango, mother Anna Fredriksdotter Kortjärvi b. 6 Oct 1858 in Terjärv (HisKi (http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en+t7956469)).

A few drawbacks:
1. Name change from Kaalikoski to Koski, very probable after emigration
2. Birth place (yet unknown due to lack of available online records) change to Himango, very feasible since father and several younger siblings were born there
3. Change in birth date, possible but remains the weakist detail in this case

But at least there's Terjärv connection!
Unfortunately SSHY/FFHA doesn't have Himango yet :(

P.S. Since Ester Maria Sandkulla's mother Lovisa Fredriksdotter Kortjärvi b. 1 Sep 1861 (HisKi (http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en+t7956729)) was sister of Matti Kaalikoski's mother Anna, I think this must be the correct person.

Jaska,

I think you're on the right track.. someone else just sent me virtually the same info. and it sounds feasible. We know that many people weren't sure of their correct birthdate. I remember my father said that people didn't pay much attention to dates, because they knew all that data could be found in the church records.

Even though Matti Koski's Naturalization paper said he was born 1884 in Himango, I wonder if he had to produce any proof of his birth date and place when he applied for naturalization? Or did they take his word for it?

I suppose that one way to verify he was born 1884 in Himango would be to contact the church in Himango and ask them to check their records to see if he actually was born there, or if he had been born elsewhere and then the family moved to Himango.

Thanks, Jaska. That was quick work. I was trying to find something about Fredrik Persson Kortjärvi, father of Anna and Lovisa.. Was he born 9 Apr 1832, Terjärv, to Per Henriksson Fors-Lytts, 1787-1852, married 1812 to Maria Carlsdotter Paalanen, 1791-1854. Fredrik moved to Kaustby 1854.

Thank you. You cracked my deadend in less than a day!
My Matti William Koski is indeed Matti Wilhelm Zachrisson Kaalikoski. A simple search with the correct name on Ancestry gave his arrival on a passenger list: SS Majestic to Ellis Island arriving 5 Jul 1906 on his way to San Francisco CA to my grandmother Irene Sandkulla. He also gives his age here consistent with HisKi information (born 1883), and claims Himango as his last residence.
Thank you all who helped solve this mystery. My wife especially thanks you, as now I can sleep better!
