Why the Irish honor St. Patrick

The Irish celebrate St. Patrick's day because he drove the Norwegians out of Ireland.

It seems that centuries ago many Norwegians came to Ireland to escape the bitterness of the Norwegian winter. Ireland was having a famine at the time and food was quite scarce. The Norwegians were eating almost all the fish caught in the area, leaving the Irish with nothing but potatoes. St. Patrick, taking matters into his own hands like most Irishmen do, decided the Norwegians had to go. Secretly he organized the IRATRION (the Irish Republican Army to Rid Ireland of Norwegians). Irish members of IRATRION sabotaged all power plants in the country in hopes the fish in Norwegian refrigerators would spoil, forcing the Norwegians to a colder climate in order to keep their fish. The fish spoiled, all right, but the Norwegians, as everyone knows today, thrive on spoiled fish. Faced with failure the Irishmen sneaked into the Norwegian fish storage caves in the dead of the night and sprinkled the rotten fish with lye, hoping to poison the Norwegian intruders. But as everyone knows today, this is how Lutefisk was introduced to the Norwegians and they thrived on this lye-soaked smelly fish. Matters became even worse for the Irishmen when the Norwegians started taking over the Irish potato crop and making lefse. Poor St. Pat was at this wit's end and finally, he blew his top and told all the Norwegians to go to HELL.

So they left Ireland and moved to North Dakota.

The Swedes also have their version of soured fish:

The Sursill progenitor was Erik Ångerman Sursill, a farm owner at Teg in Umeå in the beginning of the 16th century. In addition to being an outstanding farmer he also traded in fish, among others, the fermented variety called surströmming. According to tradition, he had delivered a consignment of surströmming to Uppsala, but the people in Södermanland didn’t appreciate that type of preserved, soured fish, and accused him of cheating them. It was de facto rotten fish they had received. This apparently gave him the name of Sursill, a nickname meaning sour herring. He took the sting out of it by adopting it as his last name.
