Matti William Tikkala (Matt), 77, of Warrenton, Ore., passed away June 6, 2015, at home with family, due to complications from Alzheimerís.

Matt was born Aug. 8, 1937, in Lappee, Finland, to Arvi and Hellin Tikkala. Mattís father passed away during World War II. Hellin and her two sons were sent to Sweden under the Finnish Quata. They arrived in Stockholm Oct. 19, 1950. They lived with a family on their farm until May 5, 1953. Mattís older brother, Arvid Tikkala, went to Canada. Hellin and Matt would come to live with Hellinís uncle in Astoria. They arrived in New York, May 6, 1953, then got on a plane to Astoria.

In Mattís younger years he went to Knappa High School, worked on a chicken farm, and on a mink farm. If you knew Matt, he had many stories about those mink, and how much he hated killing them. In the early 1960s, Matt started working at the Astoria Plywood Mill. He was a supervisor, and then became a foreman. Matt worked there for almost 30 years, until the mill closed. Matt then delivered The Oregonian for a little over a year. Matt retired at the age of 62.

Matt lived in Svensen, Astoria, and then settled in Warrenton, where he has been for almost 35 years.

Mattís wife, Renee, helped him get his United States of America citizenship March 13, 1980. This was a very proud moment for him.

Matt loved playing golf in his retired years.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, Arvi Tikkala; his mother, Hellin Marta (Kurki) Tikkala; his wife, Renee (Lumsden) Tikkala; and his brother, Arvid Tikkala. He is survived by his five children, Melissa Vendenoya, Marta Tikkala, Millie Oja, Robbie Tikkala and Matthew Tikkala; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Ritz.

A memorial service will be held at the Warrenton Community Center Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m.
