• Working in the Silver Mine

    By Ove Grundwall

In the fall of 1873 Matts Johansson Gers went to America. In America he called himself Matts Norrberg. He traveled in the company of some acquaintances from his home parish. Little did we know about Matts before we found this bundle of old letters in the attic dated from the 1870’s.

Matts was the third child of Johan and Maria Johansson Gers. He was born February 2, 1848 in Norrby, Kronoby. Previously he had worked as shipbuilder at the Kronstadt naval station outside St. Petersburg and on a wharf in the south of Finland.
