What is a GEDCOM File
http://www.kindredkonnections.com describes Gedcom as follows:
A GEDCOM file is a simple text file of your family tree that is created by genealogy software programs on a computer for sharing with other genealogy programs or for sharing on the Internet. The acronym stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. If you do not have a computer (e.g. you're on WebTV or have an Internet appliance), then just ignore references to GEDCOM files and don't try to upload one. Simply use MyTrees Online to enter you family information.
If you are maintaining your family tree on a computer using a genealogy program, then you will need to make a GEDCOM file from your family tree to upload to the Kindred Konnections site. Generally, you can look in the index of your genealogy program manual under "GEDCOM" or "Export" to find the instructions for creating a GEDCOM file from your family tree. We have outlined below the procedures for creating a GEDCOM file from some of the more popular genealogy software programs.
