Can anyone tell me the derivation of this surname found in my ancestry in Kemijärvi? I have never seen it before. FFHA/SSHY/HisKi have Tiederhane and Kiederhane. I even found one Fiederhane. Guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. Comparing letters, I believe it's "K". Any thoughts.

It's definitely K in these samples.
But Tiederhane is the only sensible version, would be Tjäderhane in modern spelling, meaning male capercaillie.

Thanks, Jaska. Now what's a capercaille?

Indeed, that magnificent bird doesn't live in American continent.

BTW. I guess I met one today when picking mushrooms ;) At least I heard a large bird escaping an intruder and flying almost through the tree branches, just like they do. I couldn't see it properly.

Jaska,
Yes, we do have grouse, but not that beautiful species. Thank you so much for the info.
