Hi, I am researching the genealogy of my husband, but we know very little of the Finnish side of his family. So much information has been lost over the years. His great-great grandfather was Matt Tuura from Kalajoki, Finland. His wife was Karen (Ida) and the couple emigrated to the U.S. some time around the 1900s. They came to America with a small daughter, named Miami Johanna Tuura and perhaps other children but that is unknown. When Matt arrived, he changed his last name to Anderson because that was the maiden name of his Swedish mother. That is all we know. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Beverly,
From the Institute of Migration I found a few leads for you on Matti Tuura. Where did they live when arriving to America? It would help to track which of these is the correct one.

Best Regards,
Denise :)

Hi Denise,
Thanks you for your help. I do know a little bit about the family here in the US. Matt emigrated first to the US and settled around Lead, South Dakota, possibly in Terraville. When the other family members arrived their last name was changed to Anderson. Matt worked for the Homestake Mine, tracing veins of gold and blasting. Later the family homesteaded in Newell, South Dakota and eventually moved to Lead, South Dakota. I'm surprised at the number of options you found. Thanks again.

I think this may be your family. I found Ida's arrival in 1903 with the children. Going to husband Matti Tuura in Lead, SD. I found the family in 1910 and 1920 under Anderson. Looks like they had a large family.

In the 1930 census, Ida was a widow. So Matt died sometime between 1920-30. I found several SD Marriage records for the children.

Karen,
You found the family we have been searching for. All of the attachments relate to his genealogy. Where did you find the documents? Ancestry.com? I would like to print copies of the attachments but enlarged. Thank you for your help.

Denise,
The Ida Tuura who departed from the port of Hanko is correct. No doubt about her. I'm not sure about any of the Matt Tuuras. Karen Norwillo sent me some information from several censuses in South Dakota so I have a couple more facts about Matt Tuura. He was born in 1866 or 1867 and his full name appears to be Matt Leonarti Tuura. His fathers' name was Adolph Tuura and his mother was Johanna Anderson. Matt emigrated to the US in 1893 and went to Lead, South Dakota. Again thanks.

Beverly,
Yes, all was from Ancestry.com. You can save the images from here to your computer and enlarge them to print. I've done it many times. I will keep looking to see if I can find more info. I would think the Matt Leander Adolfinpoika Tuura is the correct one above from the list Denise gave.

Beverly,
Checking Hiski, I think this may be Matt's father and grandparents.
4.5.1840 (4 May) Kalajoki Anders Andersson Tuura and Maria Abramsdotter...born Adolf. He is the only Adolf born right time frame.
26.9.1830 Anders Andersson Tuura and Maria Abramsdotter Tuura married Kalajoki. Tuura was a farm name, so they were both from that same farm.
Other births for this couple,
17.1.1831 Gretha Johanna
28.3.1837 Nikodemus död, died
15.12.1843 Susanna Gustafva. Birth record says father Anders Andersson Pitkäis fr Tuura and Maria Abramsdotter. They must have moved to another farm and took that name, if this is same couple.
Death, 26.6.1848 gk hu Maria Abramsdotter Tuura 36 years kolik. That would put her DOB abt 1812.
Unfortunately, records only go to 1850 for Kalajoki on Hiski.

Beverly,
I have found so much more on the Finland ancestors. I am attaching the Rippi for Kalajoki in 1813-1819. There are several generations of Tuura on it. I will try to clarify as I understand it.
Tuura
Anders Andersson 12.1?.1744, formerly Kärje. I will explain.
his wife Lisa Johansdotter (Muickula)
1. Son Anders 16.8.1781
his wife Greta 30.12.1785
Måg Jacob Pehrsson 1785, may be Greta's brother.
his wife Susanna 30.1.1775
2. Dotter Brita Caisa (Catharina) 3.1.1786+
her daughter Susanna Andersdotter 12.10.1803?
Son's son Anders Andersson 18.10.1806
Dotter's son Anders Andersson ?.10.1806
Son's son Nicodemus 30.5.1810+
3. Dotter Johanna 22.7.1810
Son's son Pehr Andersson 11.5.1814

Anders Andersson 1744 was formerly known as Kärje. He was first married to Susanna Benjaminsdotter Annala, married 6.12.1768. She died 24.8.1806 at age 60. They had 8 children.
15.7.1769 Johannes
6.8.1771 Maria

10.6.1777 Benjamin

4.5.1788 Michael, born under name Tuura
28.1.1790 born dead

Adolf 1840 and Matt c. 1867-8

I found Beverly's husband's family info back to 1744, 6 genearations. I emailed her all the info and supporting Rippikirja and that from Hiski. The Rippi shows spelling of Jacob Pehrsson as Hellman, not Kellman. Could be handwriting.
