Swedish-Finns and Finns in Michigan

Comments from the discussions on Finlander - 2009:

Karen Norwillo:

  • Iron, Gogebic, Dickinson, Baraga, Delta,Houghton, Luce, Marquette, Mannistee, Keweenaw, Ontonagon are the ones I'm most familiar with. They all had large populations of Finns and Swedes.
  • Iron..Crystal Falls, Alpha, Amasa
  • Dickinson..Kingsford, Iron Mountain
  • Delta..Escanaba

budjohnson:

You should add Felch Township, which includes Metropolitan, Felch Mountain and Felch to the list in Dickinson County. Most of the families were Swede Finn. Add Gladstone to the list in Delta County. In Thompson and Manistique in Schoolcraft County, there were a lot of Swede Finns also.

June Pelo:

  • Iosco, Alpena, Alcona, Kent, Lake, Gogebic, Manistee, Mason, Muskegon and Ogemaw counties had many Swede-Finns. Houghton, Iosco, Iron, Keweenaw had both Finns and Swede-Finns.
  • UP counties: Marquette, Schoolcraft, Luce, Delta - both Swedes and Finns there.

  • Iosco County: Oscoda, Tawas City, East Tawas, Alabaster, AuSable, Whittemore. (Lots of people from Karleby and Kronoby).
  • Alpena county: Alpena
  • Alcona: Harrisville, Greenbush, Mikado
  • Kent: Sparta
  • Lake: Baldwin, Luther
  • Gogebic: Bessemer, Wakefield, Ironwood (some from Karleby)
  • Manistee: Filer City, Bear Lake, Brethren
  • Mason: Ludington, Scottville, Freesoil, Fountain, Custer (people came from Karleby and Nedervetil).
  • Muskegon: Whitehall, Montague
  • Ogemaw: Rose City, West Branch
  • Newaygo with a large Swede-Finn population in White Cloud
    • "I submitted an article about White Cloud and its inhabitants to Gunnar at SFHS for a future article in the Quarterly. As I recall many of them were from Gamlakarleby, Karleby, Nedervetil and Terjärv."
  • I know that a lot of Finns settled in the UP because of the mines and logging.

I have information for Northfield, Michigan, but don't find it in the atlas. There was one person from Karleby.

I also have the following for Paynesville, Michigan, but don't find it in the atlas: Isojoki 1; Karvia 2; Seinajoki 1 - all Finnish.

I also had to discard over 50 names of people who emigrated from Finland to Michigan - but no place was indicated.

budjohnson:

Northfield is probably Northfield Township, which is north of Ann Arbor. Which is in Washtenaw County. Paynesville may be Painesdale? Which is in Houghton County.

Karen Norwillo

Going through the 1900 and 1910 Census, there are at least 100 Finland born people on these images in Crystal Falls. In my own family, they came from Kuolajärvi, Esse, Oravais, Pori, Karijöki and Parkano. I know many were just listed as from Vaasa or Oulu, but were from a multitude of villages. I will put together a list of surnames I found as Finland born in Crystal Falls. There are many more in Amasa, Alpha, Stambaugh etc which would be part of Iron County.

M. Waters

..."some of my favorite Swede-Finn places on your lists. Hurley WI, (Cary, Iron Belt, Gile, Montreal, etc.), and Crystal Falls MI, Ironwood MI, Dollar Bay MI, etc. Church records show the Swede-Finn presence of Swede-Finns in these areas."

"...Negaunee, Palmer, and Ishpeming! Problem: church records often listed the PLACE where my people came from, but not ethnicity. This was true of Salem (Ironwood) Lutheran Church, & many others whose records I have seen..."
