What is Talko?

It is simply a tool for genealogists interested mainly in connections to Finland. All material in the Talko database is in some way connected to Finland, either pure family history of families in Finland or emigrant connections to families in Finland.

What material?

It consists of collections of many Gedcom -files, inserted into a searchable database. Submissions are separated into collections, mostly one, sometimes several collections per submitter.

I have already sent my material but haven't got passwords yet!

The project is maintained on so called "spare time" and thus there may be delays (especially during summertime). If it has been a long time since you submitted the gedcom, please contact again - it may be that some emails haven't reached their destination.

How much information is there in the database?

Total amount of individuals currently in the Talko database is:

  • ≈1.600.000 individuals --Hasse N. 03:30, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Current collections in Talko

(coming)

Is the material correct in the database?

Yes and no.

Some collections are perhaps "better" than others. Generally one should not blindly believe everything. All collections are the results of single genealogists' researches. Some do their research also registering each and every reference - and others copy material from left and right without making notes of from where the material stems. You should thus not blindly believe in everything. Better is to use the information as a hint where you can look and get the information verified from the original sources. Also remember that most of the persons who have submitted material frequently visit the Finlander forum. If you have questions about someting in a collection - post a question!

If I have questions about the material?

The best is to register to the Finlander forum and post your questions there.

Who may have access to the database?

In theory anyone who participates in the building up of the database, ie. submits a gedcom file of his/her genealogy to the database and thus adds to the total information. Every submission is checked.

Submitting the names of my grandparents - is that enough?

No.

I understand that many think that it would be easy to submit the absolute minimum of ones own material against gaining access to the whole material... This is not the way to do it in this community. Many of the persons who have submitted material have been collecting material for decades ending up with 100.000 - 300.000 individuals in their files! If these have agreed to submit their material to the collection without hesitation then there should be no need asking oneself "how much" of my own material I should submit.

We also keep a statistic of the material submitted and this material is available to the Talko community. It is quite easy to see if somebody is trying to benefit from other persons' material by just submitting the very minimum.

The best is to be fair to all the other members and submit ones' own research - the complete research. One may also - and should - send updates every now and then.

Does this mean that only huge collections will open the doors to Talko?

The answer is no. - If you think you may have "too little" material - drop a line to and describe your situation.

Where should I send the gedcom?

  • Send the zipped gedcom document using the upload page found here <---------

'The gedcom file can also be transferred to me (Hasse) using Skype file transfer or AIM. Info upon request.

The username and password will follow if your application is accepted. If the application isn't accepted your gedcom material will not be uploaded into the database, but destroyed.

Much of my material is not about Finland?

Please mention this when you submit the material.

Any special format?

Yes, ANSI Gedcom 5.5 formatted, please. If would be nice if you have the contact information added to your file. If the file is big - kindliy zip the file before sending.

Living individuals in the submitted material

The Talko database filters out living persons from the material and doesn't show more than the surname + the intitials of the given name when the following criterias are met:

  • at least the birth year is registered for the individual or alternatively the individual marked as living

Thus if you register only children names without birth years you should correct this before submitting the material. Otherwise that individual cannot be identified as a living person who's detail information should be filtered out.

In Finland we mustn't publish sensitive information about living individuals, thus - once more - if you have living persons in your material these living persons must have a birth year in their data or be marked as living.
